Hard, Hard Summer

Hudson Mohawke at Hard Summer 2015 Purple Stage

It’s a completely different festival, backstage. You forget that there are 65,000 people out there when you only see a dozen of your friends inside an air-conditioned trailer park. Most of them utterly exhausted from festival after flight after festival. The hardest part is the waiting and the watching someone you care about on the brink of collapse, pulling themselves together because their job is to make a sea of strangers happy. That somehow when you haven’t any, the energy must be brought to a pounding pitch.

So you drink as much as you can find, smoke as much as you feel alright about missing a set

and try to find some sanity amongst it all.

Which is hugging your mates from different states and shores.

Getting silly with the sponsored marketing ploys and remembering to enjoy
what you came here for

the music (duh)

and the booty.

Red glare

How did you spend your America’s birthday?

Under the sun?

Giving zeros fucks?

Be an ass if you wanna?

Drinkin’? Watermelon?

Wit’cher boys?

and yer girls?

Pucker up

and plant a juicy one on ’em?

Pound it?

To the beat?

Then POP!

goes your weasel?

In her hair?

Laugh out loud?

‘Til you’re pooped?

Bask in the afterglow?

With someone you love?

By the dawn’s early light?

Or the rocket’s red glare?

Whatever you want, baby.
Cuz FREEDOM, THOUGH.

US, Eh?

Leave it up to America to play a big ol’ game of SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS in the World Cup on Canada’s day.

But all’s fair in love and war

so come one, neck braces, wheelchairs, non-US citizens even, come all. All America asks is that you

and I mean

and even then, like many short-lived romances,

drunken, hungry, and wanting

proud

yet anxious

triumphant

until defeated and disposed. Just remember when you’ve lost. When your sunny day heart breaks, there’s always

Canada.

HAPPY CANADA DAY

CMJ: Weaves + IMPOSSIBLE x Culture of Me

“At its core, music journalism is just people pretending to write about a band in order to write about themselves so people pretending to read about bands can read about themselves.”

– from this article on music journalism by Luke O’Neil on Bullett.

On the music PR advice front, the article also says “‘A band put out a record’ is not a story.”

Now, I’m not a music journalist, but I will tell you a story to get you to see this band who put out a record and is playing a show.

WEAVES at CMJ.

Below are photos from 2007. That was my boyfriend at the time, Morgan.

morgo

Remember formspring? I have one. You can ask me anything on it. People haven’t in a long time, but I was reading through my old answers last night.

Morgan was on TV

and in a band.

People loved that band. I love that band. They played a few years ago at Pianos and that night I apologised for writing lots of mean things about him in the past. The thing is, when the people you love, leave you, it’s easiest to lash out and make yerself hate ’em than to deal with being sad and feeling alone.

I don’t blog bitchy bad things about dudes anymore. And I can proudly admit that I will always love Morgan as a too talented dude who will forever be way cooler than I will ever be.

He is in a new band now. They are playing at CMJ on the 15th at Baby’s All Right and the 18th at Santos Party House.

This is a song that Morgan produced and the music video for it that he also produced.

You’re gonna like the part where it goes ‘C’mon Honeeeeyyyy’ and the guitary deer-neer-neer bits.

Then you’re gonna go see WEAVES play at CMJ.

And while you’re at it and instagramming the shit out of all the shows you’re seeing, stop by the IMPOSSIBLE x The Culture of Me‘s CMJ Artist Lounge in SoHo to get those photos printed, like IRL, and say hi to Jeff Meltz for me cuz I’m in LA rn.

Dennis Stock at Milk Gallery

The good thing about New York is that so much of it stays the same. You can always expect a good time, good-looking photographs, and even better looking people at Milk Gallery.

Dennis Stock’s collection of photographs featuring icons, Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and more is up now at Milk Gallery until the 17th.

I’d take James Deen over Dean any day but boy, what a sight to behold on any given afternoon, eh? Babe, diner, cake. Die.

Speaking of babes, Christine Kohler, Chris Reed, and Milk’s made Jess Conatser.

Fire and ice, Valissa Yoe and Micaela McLucas.

The only person you’d ever want to see in Times Square.

Plus these people, Ali Sky, William Yan, and cute little Coco Daniels.

MUPPETS!!!!! Joel W Henderson

Our new pet, Vesper Wolfe, and I.

In da hood they call me 2phonezzzzzz Chris and the very techy Jiddy Committee.

Joel Eel rolling up ready with a black panther pin and a Muji pen. All set.

Then I bounced with Rocky Li and R2D2 to make some sweet sweet songs.

Stock you on the internet, later.

Happy Yew Year

MelbourneNewYearsEve

I’m in Melbourne, avoiding you, and I’m too busy non-plussed to blog (like ever).
Luckily for me, I’ve got New York’s prettiest young thing, Drex Drechsel, by my side.

I think at one point I said my New Year’s resolution was to be less cruel to the people I love.
Which, I’m pretty sure I’ve already broken.
I’m not a good person, you know that.
You love me anyway.

I have managed, however, to stay pretty nice to Drex, though. Which is why there’s a photo of me and Kiki Li Ricci happily jumping on the bed on New Year’s Eve for your viewing pleasure.

Happy 2013.
Keep it real.

Thunder buddies for life

If you’re unhappy with the way things are going (which I was), don’t look at your available options and settle for the least of all evils. Go ahead and do your favourite fucking thing. Figure out what that is because until you do, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. It will eat at you, dull you, little by little.

I? Moved in with this guy, Chris Reed.
In New York, New York. Whoop!

For the first time in 3 years, I have my name on a lease. Keys I won’t have to return in a matter of weeks, a mailing address that doesn’t belong to a factory, and a bed. My bed.
I have all my things.
I get to wake up and come home to my very own little version of family.

We had a housewarming party on Canada day.

You can tell this is a social media required household.

We had the pleasure of hosting many a special Canadian guest. Meredith drove across the border for the first time!

Lacee made us couscous salad and Destinee did my nails. No one taught me how to use an old point and shoot camera properly.

Handsome boy, Rocky Li of Internet Fame. Never not hard.

Goth gurlz.

Post-teen heartthrobs. I found Austin in a Five Guys burger joint holding an American Apparel shopping bag last year.

And because this city is the greatest, I’ve found many more friends and they all dranks beers on our roof.

Come over sometime.

Mindshare LA:
The Vast Blue

Went with Destinee to Mindshare LA’s The Vast Blue event at The Alexandria.

Really great speakers centered around under the sea topics: James Cameron’s Titanic filming expeditions, sustainable sushi, and sea cucumber sex habits!

Destinee was there putting in hours practising nail art.

Little Octopus!! Too cute.

Found Nemo.

Pattern inspiration

Finally my turn to get my nails did!

Fat Joe once said “tattoo in your chest with his name in the middle”… what about his name on my middle finger? Does that still count?

What’s Luv? Got to do, got to do widdit, babe?

Dee, Kirsten, and Daniel Bedingfield. Remember that guy? Remember when Natasha Bedingfield was Daniel Bedingfield’s sister and now it’s totally the other way around? Whappened?

Super Tall Paul is supes amaze. He plays and you listen via headphones only.

Curious Josh, the event photographer, trying hard to get a serious phote of Destinee. Not gonna happen.

We had too much fun trying to make balloon animals and hats. Took a million self-timer shots of us wearing balloon everythings in front of the Range Rover but they all turned out too blurry. Wamp wamp.

So I’ll leave you with this. Huzzah.
